Robert Jordan has apparently died while still writing book 12 (the final book) of the wheel of time series. I gave up at book 8 when the dangling plot threads and no end in sight got too much for me.

Yes, I gave up about halfway too. Partly because it just wasn't all that good/interesting, and partly because it was starting to turn into one of those books where most of the women are in love with the main character, who wibbles between his feelings for this one, that one, maybe the other one...bleh.
I gave up about halfway through the first one, because it was icky. I suppose the stress of having to tie up all those dangling plot elements was just too much for the chap...

Hmm. Actually, I may have him confused with George R R Martin and I may not have read any of his stuff at all.
I quite liked the first book and I'm not a great fan of George R R Martins work, so I'll assume you had him confused
