The joys of the season- one of my students has a problem with a travel scholarship and some high-ranking administrative person told her she would expedite it before Christmas- I sent high-ranking person X an email about this just now and got an automatic reply saying she was out of the office from December 19th but I should contact Y or Z. I sent Y an email and it came back with an automatic message saying she was away until January 7th. Then I rang Z and got a recorded message saying she was away from *December 12th* until January...sigh... There is suggestion in Y's email that I should contact W, but I haven't the heart to try just now...

btw, I sympathise with the automatic messages. You'd think they'd communicate just a little better. But maybe they just don't care.
